REGINA, Sask. (Golf Canada) – Amy Yang, gunning for her first victory of 2018, shot a second-round 65 at the CPKC Women’s Open to hold the 36-hole lead at 13-under 131. The three-time LPGA Tour winner, who last visited the winner’s circle in February 2017 at the Honda LPGA Thailand, took advantage of the prime early scoring conditions, carding nine birdies to just two bogeys.
“My putting was really good today,” said Yang, who needed just 26 putts Friday. “I was hitting it pretty solid out there, but I gave myself a lot of good chances, and I think I made most of them out there.”
Yang holds a one-stroke lead over young guns Brooke Henderson and Angel Yin. Henderson again had partisan Canadian crowds following her every move, thrilling the fans with a closing birdie at No. 9, while Yin carded three consecutive birdies to finish her round.
“To be close to the top of the leaderboard heading into the weekend is awesome, especially when you’re here in Canada.”
Those words from Brooke Henderson highlight what could be a classic fairytale for Canada’s beloved star. Henderson started the day with a 55-yard birdie putt from off the green that set the pace for a crowd-pleasing round of 6-under 66 and a tie for second, one stroke behind the lead.
“To see that many people there to watch me finish was incredible. I was happy I was able to birdie for them and get to 12-under. It was a great day,” said Henderson, who carded seven birdies and one bogey on Friday. “I think starting on the back nine kind of gave me a lot of momentum, making a lot of birdies, and then was able to finish really strong here.”
If her hot streak continues over the weekend, Henderson would become the first Canadian to win Canada’s national championship since Canadian Golf Hall of Famer Jocelyne Bourassa accomplished the feat in 1973. She’s already set her best CPKC Women’s Open 36-hole score by eight strokes (she shot 140 in 2016) and heads into the weekend in the top five – the highest position she’s ever held in her home tournament.
While any hometown hero would feel the pressure of winning, Henderson felt comfortable and enjoyed Friday’s round.
“It’s definitely a lot easier to play in front of the fans when you’re playing really well,” Henderson added. “So, hopefully I keep it up.”
WEATHER COMES INTO PLAY AT WASCANA
Weather was a major factor on Friday afternoon, with winds gusting to 35 mph and temperatures quickly dropping. Winds picked up significantly starting at 11 a.m., giving players in the morning wave a marked advantage on those who played in the afternoon. The scoring average for the morning wave was 71.5, while it was 74.6 for the afternoon wave.
“I kind of was a little flustered in the middle when the wind picked up,” said Angel Yin, who carded both of her bogeys as she adjusted to the changing conditions. “I didn’t adjust quickly enough and I wasn’t hitting it well.”
Of the players in the top 10, only Ariya Jutanugarn (T4, three strokes behind Yang) played in the afternoon and she started the day tied for the lead.

REGINA, Sask. (Golf Canada) – A trio of players at very different places in their LPGA careers sit atop the leaderboard at 8-under 64 after 18 holes at the CPKC Women’s Open.
Ariya Jutanugarn, who won the CPKC Women’s Open in 2016, is aiming for her fourth win of 2018, a season where she is leading the LPGA Tour in numerous statistical categories. Second-year player Nasa Hataoka struggled in her rookie year of 2017 but broke through in June for her first LPGA Tour victory at the Walmart NW Arkansas Championship presented by P&B, while nine-year veteran Mariajo Uribe is still looking for her elusive first victory. The three players combined for 26 birdies and only two bogeys and sit one stroke clear of Angel Yin and Nanna Koerstz Madsen at 7-under 65.
Canadian favorite Brooke Henderson of Smith Falls, Ont., opened with a bogey, but came back with four consecutive birdies at holes 4-7, finishing at 6-under 66 and in a seven-way tie for sixth, a group that includes three-time CPKC Women’s Open champion Lydia Ko.
REGINA OUT IN FORCE FOR CANADIAN FAVOURITE HENDERSON
If you see a crowd on a Canadian golf course when the LPGA Tour is town, you can pretty much bet they’re watching Brooke Henderson. That was certainly the case on Thursday, as throngs of Regina natives lined the first tee as Henderson opened her first round, and they stayed with her for all 18 holes.
“When I first teed off this morning the fairway was lined and I wasn’t necessarily expecting that,” said Henderson, who carded eight birdies and two bogeys in her 6-under 66. “It was really amazing. The crowds just seemed to hang with me all day, even though it’s late. Even walking up 18 there were tons of people.”
While Henderson has reached the weekend at the last four CPKC Women’s Opens, even she admits the first round at her national championship has not necessarily been her friend. Today marks the first time she broke 70 in the first round, setting herself up for what she hopes is a strong finish – and just maybe becoming the first Canadian winner of this event since 1973.
“If I can do something like this over the next three days I think good things could happen,” said Henderson, who would join Jocelyne Bourassa as the only Canadian female to win her national golf title on home soil. “I’m just taking it a shot at a time and day by day and hopefully climbing up the leaderboard a little bit every day.”
LEADERS SET WASCANA COURSE RECORD
With their first-round 64s, Nasa Hataoka, Ariya Jutanugarn and Mariajo Uribe set the course record at Wascana Country Club. The previous mark was 65, shot by Todd Fanning of Winnipeg and Charles Fitzsimmons of London, Ont., when the course hosted the 2017 Canadian Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship.

REGINA, Sask. (Golf Canada) – Newly minted Rolex Ranking No. 1 Sung Hyun Park is excited to return to Canada and defend her 2017 CPKC Women’s Open title.
A more confident and experienced Park enters this week’s event at Wascana Country Club after taking her fifth career victory at last week’s Indy Women in Tech Championship driven by Group 1001, which bumped her ahead of Thailand’s Ariya Jutanugarn for the top spot in the Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings.
“I am so excited and happy to be ranked No. 1,” said Park, who became the first LPGA Tour rookie to reach the top of the world rankings when she held the spot for one week in November 2017. “Nothing has really changed. It does put a little bit of pressure on me, but I just want to maintain that type of play. I’m still going to focus on what I need to get done this week.”
The early portion of the 2018 season brought Park into a difficult patch in her game. Through her first 15 events, she grabbed two wins, but also uncharacteristically missed six cuts and only earned two other top-10 finishes. The hyper-competitive Park started to question if she would be able to live up to the lofty expectations set by her fans – and by herself. Now with those doubts cast aside, Park pursues more success in the last stretch of the 2018 season.
“I now have a lot more experience under my belt,” said the 24-year-old with five career LPGA Tour wins. “Even though I’ve had a couple missed cuts this season, I still feel like this is a really great season for me and I think I can win more tournaments this year.”
Most people don’t excel at professional sports at age 15. But most people aren’t Lydia Ko. The New Zealander won the 2012 CPKC Women’s Open as a 15-year-old amateur, becoming the youngest winner in LPGA history.
“I think even at that time it didn’t really settle in,” said Ko, who followed her maiden win up with another win in 2013 as an amateur and tacked on a third Canadian national title in 2015 as a professional. “I think you’re so young that you don’t really know what’s going on. Obviously, you’re super excited and super happy to have won, but, you know, I think I feel like I was very lucky right now looking back more than I was actually at that time. It was a lot to take in.”
Three years removed from that last win and Ko is primed for her fourth victory north of the border. The 21-year-old comes to Regina off a T16 finish at last week’s Indy Women in Tech Championship driven by Group 1001, and hopes to better her Canadian performance from 2017, when she missed the cut for the first time in her CPKC Women’s Open career.
“Every time I come back to Canada I feel like it’s another home for me,” said Ko. “It’s always great to come back to a place where you feel really welcomed and you don’t feel like a stranger. The crowds are there on practice rounds and Pro-Ams. That’s how excited they are to see us. I think that’s a cool thing for us to play in front of these massive crowds.”
The opening-round of the 2018 CPKC Women’s Open begins at 7:00 am off the first and 10th tees.

Lori White has volunteered at the CPKC Women’s Open both times the Tour has visited Ottawa Hunt and Golf Club, which is also her home course. White did such a good job in 2008 as the Chair of Communications that she was elevated to the Tournament Co-Chair for the 2017 event.
For her contributions to the CPKC Women’s Open, White is the recipient of the 2018 XL Catlin Volunteer Service Award.
The perfect example of White’s eagerness to be the best Tournament Co-Chair possible came in 2016. In advance of the 2017 event back in Ottawa, she took time out of her busy schedule to fly across the country and attend the 2016 CPKC Women’s Open in Calgary to better understand the scope of organizing her volunteers. White also played a pivotal role in enlisting 49 members of the Ottawa Hunt and Golf Club to manager 20 volunteer committees. She also spearheaded the recruitment of 1,200 volunteers.

REGINA, Sask. (Golf Canada) – Saskatoon native Bobbi Brandon was one of four golfers to claim the final exemptions into the 2018 CPKC Women’s Open via Monday’s qualifying event at Royal Regina Golf Club.
Brandon, a PGA of Canada Professional who works out of Moon Lake Golf & Country Club, carded a 2-over-par 74 to sit T2 among the 11-player field. This will be Brandon’s second appearance at the CPKC Women’s Open. She competed in Canada’s National Women’s Open in 1998 at Essex Golf and Country Club in Windsor, Ont., where she missed the cut.
Sweden’s Louise Stahle fired a 2-under par 70 to earn medalist honours.
American Jennifer Hahn (74) and Japanese amateur Kasumi Kuniyoshi (76) earned the final two spots.
Brandon will be the 16th Canadian in the field at the CPKC Women’s Open. All are trying to become the first Canadian to win an LPGA Tour event on Canadian soil since Canadian Golf Hall of Fame honoured member Jocelyne Bourassa won La Canadienne in 1973.

REGINA, Sask. (Golf Canada) –– The final four spots into the 2018 CPKC Women’s Open field will be determined in Monday’s final qualifying event at The Royal Regina Golf Club.
A total of 19 competitors will challenge for one of four spots into the field for Canada’s National Women’s Open Golf Championship. The Final Qualifier features 18 holes of stroke play with the low four competitors receiving an exemption into the 2018 CPKC Women’s Open field. If necessary, a hole-by-hole playoff will be conducted immediately following the conclusion of play.

Park, winner of the 2017 event at Ottawa Hunt and Golf Club headlines a group of six past champions coming to Regina including three-time winner Lydia Ko (2012, 2013, 2015) in search of her record fourth title. Other past champions confirmed include Brittany Lincicome (2011), Katherine Kirk (2008), Cristie Kerr (2006) and Juli Inkster (1984). Previously confirmed past champion Michelle Wie was forced to WD due to injury.

With the one of the strongest fields on the LPGA Tour, Canada’s National Women’s Open Championship will feature 14 in-year LPGA Tour winners and 89 of the top 100 players on the LPGA Tour’s Official Money List.

REGINA (Golf Canada) – Golf Canada and Canadian Pacific (CP) are pleased to announce the names of 14 players who have received exemptions into the 2018 CPKC Women’s Open taking place August 20-26 at the Wascana Country Club in Regina.
Canadian Golf Hall of Fame member and CP ambassador Lorie Kane of Charlottetown, a four-time LPGA Tour winner, will make her record tying 28th start in Canada’s National Women’s Open.
A trio of Team Canada Young Pro Squad players—Brittany Marchand of Orangeville, Ont., Augusta James of Bath, Ont., and Jennifer Ha of Calgary—have also received an exemption to compete in the 46th playing of Canada’s National Women’s Open Championship.
Marchand began the season with conditional status on the LPGA Tour, but made the most of her starts on Tour, making the cut in 10 of 12 starts including a T7 finish at the Thornberry Creek LPGA Classic. James, a former winner on the Symetra Tour, currently sits 46th on the Tour’s official money list. She’s made the cut at six of 12 starts including a T3 finish. Ha, a former Alberta amateur standout who played on the LPGA Tour in 2017, is currently in her 3rd season on the Symetra Tour. Marchand, James and Ha will compete in their 5th, 5th and 3rd CPKC Women’s Open respectively.
Saskatchewan native Anna Young—currently in her third year on the Symetra Tour—will have a home crowd advantage as the four-time Saskatchewan Women’s Amateur champion makes her first ever start in the CPKC Women’s Open.
Two other Canadian Symetra Tour players—Elizabeth Tong of Thornhill, Ont., and Megan Osland of Kelowna, B.C., will also compete at Wascana. Tong, a graduate of the Team Canada Amateur Squad, and Osland currently sit 100 and 122 respectively on the Symetra Tour money list.
Celeste Dao of Notre-Dame-de-l’Île-Perrot, Que., leads a group of four amateurs exempt into Canada’s lone stop on the LPGA Tour. Dao, an 18-year old member of the Team Canada Development Squad, recently won the 2018 Canadian Junior Girls Championship, as well as the 2018 Mexican Junior Girls Championship. She will make her first ever start in the CPKC Women’s Open.
National Amateur Squad players Grace St-Germain of Ottawa and Naomi Ko of Victoria, B.C., will also compete in the 2018 CPKC Women’s Open. St-Germain, 20, finished 7th at the 2018 Women’s Porter Cup and T1 at both the 2018 NJCAA National Championship and 2018 NJCAA Region 8 Championship as a member of Daytona State College. Ko, heading into her senior year at N.C. State, is a former Canadian Junior Girls champion who finished T33 at the 2018 Canadian Women’s Amateur.
Sixteen-year old Yealimi Noh of Concord, Calif., won the 2018 Canadian Women’s Amateur Championship to earn her exemption into the CPKC Women’s Open. Currently ranked no. 21 on the World Amateur Golf Ranking, Noh is among the hottest amateur golfers on the planet this season with wins at the 2018 U.S. Junior Girls Amateur Championship and 2018 Girls Junior PGA Championship.
Tiffany Kong of Vancouver also earned an exemption after finishing as the low Canadian (T6) at the 2018 Canadian Women’s Amateur Championship. The 17-year old will make her second start in the national championship after Monday Qualifying for the 2015 CPKC Women’s Open at The Vancouver Golf Club as a 14-year old.
A pair of LPGA Tour veterans—Natalie Gulbis and Becky Morgan—have also accepted an invitation to compete at The Wascana. Gulbis, a long-time fan favourite on the LPGA Tour with a victory and 37 career top-10 finishes on the LPGA Tour, will make her 11th appearance at the CPKC Women’s Open while Morgan, a Wales native who has played 18 years on the LPGA Tour will play in Canada’s National Open for the 12th time.
The players receiving exemptions are added to an already stellar list of golfers who will be competing at the 2018 CPKC Women’s Open.
No player will generate more excitement than Canadian sensation and CP ambassador Brooke Henderson of Smiths Falls, Ont., who will compete in her eighth career National Women’s Open. Henderson will be joined by seven of the top 10 ranked players in the world, including world no. 1 Ariya Jutanugarn.
