OTTAWA (Golf Canada) –– As part of Canada 150 celebrations, the nation’s capital is hosting the stars of the LPGA Tour, including a strong Canadian contingent led by last week’s LPGA Tour winner Brooke Henderson. Golf Canada, in partnership with Canadian Pacific (CP), has announced many of the world’s top players have committed to play in the 2017 CPKC Women’s Open from August 21-27 at the Ottawa Hunt & Golf Club.

Defending champion Ariya Jutanugarn leads a stellar list of early commitments set to challenge for the $2.25 million USD purse, one of the largest prizes on tour. A six-time winner on the LPGA Tour, the Thailand native recently climbed to No. 1 in the Rolex World Rankings following her victory at the 2017 Manulife LPGA Classic in Waterloo, Ont.

Three-time CPKC Women’s Open champion and world No. 2 Lydia Ko of New Zealand will be searching for a record fourth Canadian Women’s Open title. Ko’s three Canadian titles (2012, 2013 and 2015) ties the 20-year-old with Meg Mallon and Pat Bradley for most victories at Canada’s National Women’s Open. A 14-time winner on the LPGA Tour, Ko held the No. 1 world ranking for 85 weeks prior to Jutanugarn.

World No. 3 So Yeon Ryu, who won the inaugural CPKC Women’s Open in 2014, will also compete at Ottawa Hunt. Jutanugarn and Ryu are among nine of the top-10 players on the LPGA Tour Official Money List who have confirmed their intention to compete in the nation’s capital later this summer. Other top-10 commitments include In Gee Chun, Christie Kerr, Canada’s Brooke Henderson, Inbee Park, Anna Nordqvist, Sei Young Kim and Sung Hyn Park.

No player will generate more excitement this August in Ottawa than Canadian sensation Brooke Henderson of nearby Smiths Falls, Ont., who will compete in her seventh career National Open, this time in front of hometown crowds at Ottawa Hunt & Golf Club. Coming off her impressive come from behind win at last week’s Meijer LPGA Classic, the four-time winner and major champion has amassed 18 top-10s since joining the LPGA Tour in late 2015. The graduate of Golf Canada’s National Team program is a former world No. 1 amateur and represented Canada at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil where she finished T7.

A proud ambassador for CP, Henderson will lead the Canadian contingent into Ottawa as part of the Canada 150 celebration events being hosted in the nation’s capital. World No. 71 and Canadian Olympian Alena Sharp of Hamilton will look to improve on her top-five finish at the 2016 CPKC Women’s Open as she competes in her national Open for the 13th time. Canadian Golf Hall of Fame honoured member and CP ambassador Lorie Kane, a four-time winner on the LPGA Tour will be competing in Canada’s National Open Championship for a record 27th consecutive time. LPGA Tour members Jennifer Ha of Calgary and Maude-Aimée LeBlanc of Sherbrooke, Que., are also set to compete and will be joined by several more Canadians to be announced in the coming weeks.

Jutanugarn, Ko and Ryu will be among nine past champions competing this year along with Brittany Lincicome (2011), Michelle Wie (2010), Suzann Pettersen (2009), Cristie Kerr (2007), Karrie Webb (1999), Laura Davies (1996) and Katherine Kirk who won the event in 2008 when Ottawa Hunt last hosted the stars of the LPGA Tour.

The field of 156 golfers teeing it up at Ottawa Hunt is expected to again represent arguably the strongest field on the LPGA Tour, carrying over from the 2016 event which welcomed 96 of the top 100 players on the LPGA Tour money list.

“We are thrilled to bring the stars of the LPGA Tour back to Ottawa Hunt as part of the special Canada 150 celebrations happening in the nation’s capital and across Canada in 2017,” said Tournament Director Brent McLaughlin. “Ottawa is a tremendous golf market with passionate golf fans and no doubt the global stars of the LPGA Tour and Canadian talents led by hometown hero Brooke Henderson will make for a truly special event in 2017.”

CP Has Heart Charity Campaign to benefit the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario…
Now in its fourth year, CP’s community investment program, CP Has Heart is committed to raising funds in support of children’s heart health in the host community of the CPKC Women’s Open. The 2017 edition of Canada’s National Women’s Open is proud to have the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) as the beneficiary charity.

The CP Has Heart fundraising activities tied to the CPKC Women’s Open and CHEO are part of CP’s overarching “Beautiful Hearts” campaign across the Ottawa region which will also run during the CFL regular season, playoffs and Grey Cup.

The “Beautiful Hearts” campaign will support the refurbishment of facilities that patients use every day at CHEO and the University of Ottawa Heart Institute and celebrate the resiliency and spirit of the human heart.

“At CP, we take great pride in our history of connecting Canada and are thrilled to be in Ottawa for this celebration connecting Canadians with the world’s best golfers – including our CP Ambassadors Brooke Henderson and Lorie Kane – and connecting CHEO with opportunities to further its important work,” said Keith Creel, CP President and CEO. “Our family of 12,000 railroaders is excited about the tournament, but more than that, we are excited to leave a charitable legacy in the nation’s capital. CP Has Heart’s ‘Beautiful Hearts’ campaign will bring crucial support to both CHEO and the Ottawa Heart Institute this year.”

Each year, CHEO touches the lives of more than 500,000 infants, children and youth from Eastern and Northern Ontario, Western Quebec and Nunavut. To better care for these patients, CHEO will be embarking on a $1.8 million project to upgrade the hospital’s Catheterization Lab and Interventional Suite. A redesigned space, specialized equipment and pediatric specific training will be critically important elements in the health and wellness of CHEO’s patients.

Through August 27, 2017, CP will match all donations made towards pediatric cardiac care and research at cheoheart.com. CP will also donate $5,000 to CHEO for every birdie made by a player on the 15th hole at Ottawa Hunt during this year’s championship. The 15th hole will also feature the 15th Green CP Fan Zone where golf fans can donate $20 to upgrade their grounds pass to access a covered greenside bleacher and viewing area with all proceeds to benefit CHEO.

Since 2014, the CP Has Heart charity campaign has raised more than $4.5 million in support of children’s heart health.

Kids 17-and-under Get in Free…
Golf Canada and CP are committed to offering a fan friendly, family event with the CPKC Women’s Open. To introduce more juniors to the sport, children aged 17-and-under get FREE admission to the CPKC Women’s Open for the entire week.

WASCANA COUNTRY CLUB TO HOST THE 2018 CP WOMEN’S OPEN

Golf Canada and Canadian Pacific to bring LPGA Tour and Canada’s National Women’s Open Championship to Saskatchewan for the first time ever

REGINA (Golf Canada) – For the first time, Saskatchewan will play host to a major LPGA Tour event as Golf Canada and Canadian Pacific (CP) have announced the 2018 CPKC Women’s Open will head to Regina’s Wascana Country Club from August 20-26, 2018.

“We are very excited to bring the CPKC Women’s Open to Regina and the province of Saskatchewan in 2018,” said Tournament Director Brent McLaughlin. “Saskatchewan is a tremendous golf community and we are confident Wascana Country Club will be a fitting test to challenge the world’s best women’s golfers.”

Through its CP Has Heart campaign, CP will once again be making a significant charitable donation within the host community. In its first three years of title sponsorship, from 2014-2016, the campaign has raised over $4.5 million in host communities.

“We are proud to be part of such a high-profile event on the LPGA Tour and are excited to bring the tournament to Saskatchewan, an integral province within our rail network,” said Martin Cej, Assistant Vice-President of Public Affairs and Communications for CP. “In coordination with our CP Has Heart campaign, we look forward to leaving a significant charitable legacy in the Regina community.”

After a three-year recruiting process, Wascana Country Club finally earned its opportunity to host the stars of the LPGA Tour after originally submitting a bid back in 2014. The club is one of only four private golf courses in a province that counts 206 total facilities.

“We are delighted to have been chosen to host the prestigious 2018 CPKC Women’s Open, as this will be a chance for us to show the world what the city of Regina has to offer,” said Michael Fougere, Mayor of Regina.

The Wascana Country Club has welcomed more than 30 notable championships since its founding in 1911, including the PGA of Canada Championship in 1992; the Saskatchewan Men’s Amateur Golf Championship six times, most recently in 2005; and the Saskatchewan Women’s Amateur Golf Championship 10 times between 1915 and 1990. The 18-hole championship course set in the wetlands of Saskatchewan will also play host to the 2017 Canadian Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship later this summer in August.

“Our board of directors, members and staff are truly excited about hosting this most prestigious event,” said Greg Dukart, Chief Executive Officer of Wascana Country Club. “Our venue is ready and our championship golf course will provide a memorable and unique examination to the world’s greatest female golfers. We are looking forward to being part of the great history of the CPKC Women’s Open.”

Canada’s National Women’s Open Championship has traditionally featured one of the strongest fields on the LPGA Tour vying for a total purse of $2.25 million USD, one of the largest purses on tour. The CPKC Women’s Open welcomes the top players on the LPGA Tour including CP golf ambassadors Brooke Henderson and Lorie Kane and fellow Canadian Alena Sharp, along with past champions and LPGA stars such as Lydia Ko, Ariya Jutanugarn, So Yeon Ryu, Suzann Pettersen and Michele Wie.

“The Greater Regina Area is emerging as one of the best places in Canada to host an event, convention or trade show. Our unique assets and attractions combine to create what we call, the Regina Advantage. The 2018 CPKC Women’s Open Championship will help showcase Regina and all we have to offer to a world-wide audience,” said John Lee, President & CEO of Economic Development Regina. “

First conducted in 1973, Canada’s National Women’s Open Championship has allowed the brightest stars of the LPGA Tour to shine on Canadian soil and to inspire the nation’s next generation of female golfers.

As part of ongoing Canada 150 celebrations, Ottawa Hunt and Golf Club will host the 2017 edition of the CPKC Women’s Open later this summer in Canada’s capital.

CP supports “Beautiful Hearts” in Ottawa through 2017 LPGA and CFL events

CALGARY – February is Heart Month and Canadian Pacific (CP) is proud to announce two major charity partnerships that will benefit the beautiful hearts of children and adults in Ottawa through the 2017 CPKC Women’s Open and CFL regular season, playoffs and Grey Cup.

The overall campaign, titled “Beautiful Hearts”, will support the refurbishment of facilities that patients use every day at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) and University of Ottawa Heart Institute and celebrate the resiliency and spirit of the human heart.

CHEO is the official beneficiary of the 2017 CPKC Women’s Open at the Ottawa Hunt and Golf Club, August 21-27. The University of Ottawa Heart Institute will benefit from all funds raised through our partnership with the CFL throughout 2017.

“CP is excited to celebrate Canada’s 150th anniversary in the nation’s capital while supporting two world-renowned hospitals by bringing the best LPGA golfers and CFL players together,” said Keith Creel, CP President and CEO. “Through CP’s community investment program, CP Has Heart, the ‘Beautiful Hearts’ campaign will bring crucial support to both CHEO and the Ottawa Heart Institute this year.”

Each year, CHEO touches the lives of more than 500,000 infants, children and youth from Eastern and Northern Ontario, Western Quebec and Nunavut. To better care for all of these patients, CHEO will be embarking on a $1.8 million project to upgrade the hospital’s Catheterization Lab and Interventional Suite. A redesigned space, specialized equipment and pediatric specific training will be critically important elements in the health and wellness of CHEO’s patients.

“Technological advancements offering the clearest and most concise images for our doctors are a vital element of the Catheterization Lab and Interventional Suite upgrade that will be funded with the help of CP’s ‘Beautiful Hearts’ campaign,” said Kevin Keohane, CHEO Foundation President and CEO. “The result will be a technologically advanced suite that will allow doctors and technologists to more accurately diagnose, and more gently treat, vulnerable young patients.”

Born with a rare type of congenital heart malformation, Zander Zatylny underwent two open heart surgeries by age one. Now seven, Zander has had eight stents placed into both his right and left pulmonary arteries to improve blood flow. He requires regular monitoring and will need future interventions. He will benefit first-hand from real-time, 3D imaging that will guide his physicians during future procedures.

As children grow into adults, their care transfers to the University of Ottawa Heart Institute. Four days after her birth in Vancouver, Olivia Hiddema had her first open-heart surgery At age two, Olivia and her family moved to Ottawa where the doctors and nurses at CHEO monitored her regularly as she progressed through childhood. When Olivia turned 18, she graduated from CHEO to the Adult Congenital Heart Clinic at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute where she underwent a second open heart surgery at age 20.
Olivia will directly benefit from the University of Ottawa Heart Institute’s largest expansion in its 40 year history, adding 145,000 square feet of state-of-the-art clinical space to the existing facility.

This expansion will allow the Institute to continue to serve the cardiac care needs of Canadians, as the referral centre for hospitals throughout Ottawa and Eastern Ontario, Nunavut, and for many more patients from coast-to-coast who come to Ottawa for life-saving procedures.

“The next five years will be the most exciting of the Institute’s history,” said Jim Orban, President and CEO of the University of Ottawa Heart Institute Foundation. “Partnerships like the one with CP Has Heart are vital to the Institute’s evolution and support like this ensures that world-class cardiovascular treatment, programs and patient care are available today, shaping the lives of so many Canadians tomorrow.”

This week, as part of the Ottawa Heart Institute’s “February is Heart Month” campaign, CP is matching donations to a maximum of $7,500, turning your support into up to $15,000 for the Heart Institute. Donate at FebruaryisHeartMonth.ca.

For every retweet, Facebook share or ‘love’ reaction of the “Beautiful Hearts” video from the @CFL, the League will donate 50 cents to the University of Ottawa Heart Institute.
Stay tuned to @CPhasHeart on Facebook and Twitter and at CPHasHeart.ca to see how you can further contribute and help both charities in the coming months.

Henderson named Canadian Pacific golf ambassador

CALGARY– Three-time LPGA Tour winner and eighth-ranked player in the world, Brooke Henderson is joining Canadian Pacific (CP) as its newest ambassador for the CPKC Women’s Open.

Henderson will join longtime ambassador Lorie Kane in representing CP and the CPKC Women’s Open over the course of the railway’s partnership with Golf Canada as title sponsor of Canada’s National Women’s Open Championship.

“It is an honour to welcome Brooke to the CP team,” said Keith Creel, CP President and CEO. “Brooke is the perfect ambassador for CP as we continue to grow the game of golf, advocate for healthy living through CP Has Heart, and build on the iconic Canadian brand that is CP.”

The 19-year old Canadian prodigy, born in Smiths Falls, Ontario, won the 2015 Cambia Portland Classic as a Monday qualifier, becoming the first Canadian to win on tour since CP ambassador Lorie Kane in 2001. After that win, and just prior to the start of the 2015 CPKC Women’s Open, LPGA commissioner Mike Whan granted Henderson membership on the tour, a unique allowance as nearly all members must be over the age of 18. Since then, Henderson has taken the LPGA by storm, consistently finishing at, or near, the top of the leaderboard.

“Smiths Falls is a CP town and a few of my family members proudly work at the railway,” Henderson said. “Being able to wear the CP logo is truly special, and I look forward to celebrating many more victories with CP and my rail family, which now includes thousands of CP’s hard working employees.”

Henderson is also a graduate of Golf Canada’s National Amateur Squad and Young Pro Squad supported by CP, which marked the beginning of her relationship with the railway.

With her win at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship in 2016, Henderson became just the second Canadian to capture an LPGA major championship. She also represented Canada at the Rio Olympic Summer Games.

Henderson joins Kane – who blazed the trail for her younger competitors on her way to four LPGA Tour wins, the most by a Canadian – as a CP golf ambassador.

“I am excited to welcome Brooke to the CP family,” said Kane. “I look forward to teaming up with her to continue to grow the game and make significant contributions in the communities that CP has helped to build across our nation; especially as we celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday this year.”

To coincide with Canada 150 celebrations, the 2017 Canadian Pacific Women’s Open will return to the Ottawa Hunt and Golf Club from August 21 to 27. Through its CP Has Heart campaign, CP will once again make a significant donation to cardiac care in the host community, with funds benefiting improvements in diagnoses and treatment at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario. Alberta kids, Ariya Jutanugarn big winners at Canadian Pacific Women’s Open

CALGARY – Ariya Jutanugarn topped one of the deepest fields on the LPGA tour, including dozens of recent Olympians, to win the Canadian Pacific Women’s Open title, with local kids also winning big thanks to CP’s $2 million donation to the Alberta Children’s Hospital in support of pediatric cardiac care and research.

“It was a tremendous week from start to finish and we couldn’t be prouder of Ariya and our partnership with the Alberta Children’s Hospital,” said E. Hunter Harrison, CP’s CEO. “Having the tournament at Priddis Greens Golf and Country Club, in our home city and province, is bitter sweet as it is my last Open as CEO. I will be forever proud of the contributions we have made as a result of our involvement with Golf Canada and the CPKC Women’s Open – all part of our commitment, through CP Has Heart, to give where we live and operate.”

CP’s donation, one of the largest on the LPGA tour, will support the hospital in researching the development of “liquid biopsy,” a non-invasive procedure that doctors hope will replace invasive tissue biopsies currently used to determine if a child’s transplanted heart is being attacked by his or her immune system. This new approach, in combination with the advanced DNA sequencing technologies at the Alberta Children’s Hospital Research Institute, can also be used to make a genetic diagnosis for congenital heart disease before a baby is born.

“As a member of the cardiology team at the Alberta Children’s Hospital, I am thrilled with the support they have received from the tournament,” said Dr. Steven Greenway, Pediatric Cardiologist, Alberta Children’s Hospital. “For more than 25 years, the cardiology team at the Alberta Children’s Hospital has been providing leading-edge care for kids in our community. This incredible gift will be used to take our research even further from the lab to the clinic as we develop new, non-invasive tests and personalized treatments for children with heart conditions.”

The final donation total was a result of a number of fundraising initiatives leading up to the conclusion of the golf tournament, including Spruce Meadows Clear Rounds for Heart, Alberta Children’s Hospital Radio-thon and online donation matching.

“The CP Has Heart campaign has brought our community together in a wonderful way. For children who rely on cardiac care and research at the Alberta Children’s Hospital, the 2016 CPKC Women’s Open has left a life-changing legacy in our city for years to come,” said Saifa Koonar, President and CEO, Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation. We are extremely grateful to CP, Golf Canada and Priddis Greens Golf and Country Club for making this memorable event possible!”

In Canada, one in 100 babies is born with a congenital heart disease. Every year in Alberta, that translates to 500 infants – and their families – who find themselves embarking upon a life-altering journey as a result. That includes CPKC Women’s Open’s Ambassador, Alexa Castillo, and her family. The family was referred to the Alberta Children’s Hospital where doctors told them their daughter would be born with critical aortic stenosis, a life-threatening heart defect where the aorta in her left ventricle does not work properly. At only eight years old, Alexa has had multiple open heart surgeries and will need a lifetime of care from cardiac specialists.

“It has been so humbling to see the community rally around kids like our daughter who need help for their very special hearts,” said Jorge Castillo, Alexa’s father. “The care at the Alberta Children’s Hospital is amazing and this wonderful gift is going to make it even better for children and their families who will need it in the future.”

To coincide with Canada 150 celebrations, next year’s Canadian Pacific Women’s Open will return to the nation’s capital and the Ottawa Hunt and Golf Club from August 21 to 27, 2017. CP will announce its charity partner at a later date.

“This week was a fantastic showcase of golf and charitable giving – we congratulate CP, the CP Has Heart program, and everyone involved in the tournament,” said Scott Simmons, CEO of Golf Canada. “We look forward to 2017 in Ottawa when we celebrate Canada’s 150th with an iconic Canadian company and the best golfers in the world.”

ARIYA JUTANUGARN WINS CP WOMEN’S OPEN

Alena Sharp finishes 4th and earns Sandra Post Medal as low Canadian professional

Calgarian Jaclyn Lee earns Marlene Streit Medal as low amateur

News and notes from Priddis Greens Golf and Country Club for Sunday, August 28

CALGARY – Ariya Jutanugarn shot a bogey-free, 8-under 64 to jump into the 36-hole lead at the CPKC Women’s Open.

CALGARY – Thailand’s Ariya Jutanugarn shot a 6-under 66 on Sunday to capture the CPKC Women’s Open by four strokes – an LPGA Tour-leading fifth victory of the year. The Bangkok native finished the championship at 23-under-par to tie the tournament low set by South Korea’s So Yeon Ryu in 2014.

The 20-year-old collected seven birdies, including four across a bogey-free back nine on Sunday, and counted a single bogey on the day. In total, she only tallied four bogeys during the entire 72-hole competition.

Despite a dominant performance, the champion focused more so on her mindset than her play on the course.

“Because I just came back from injury – like, my knee hurt – I feel like I really wanted to be happy on the course,” said the world’s No. 2 ranked golfer. “I really wanted to have fun with my caddie on the course.”

Jutanugarn claimed three consecutives victories in May, beginning at the Yokohama Tire LPGA Classic, before capturing her first major championship at the 2016 RICOH Women’s British Open in July.

After representing Thailand at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, where she had to withdraw with a knee injury, her return to the LPGA garnered a second straight win on Tour. She has battled through injuries and low points over the past three years, but credits a change within herself for her recent stretch of improved play.

“Before, I was thinking about making the cut, I wanted to win, I wanted to finish Top-10…everything was getting worse. It was never getting better. I just changed my focus to be honest with myself. I just really want to be happy on the course. That’s all I need.”

South Korea’s Sei Young Kim fired a 65 to finish second at 19-under, while compatriot In Gee Chun carded a 69 to place third at 18-under.

Hamilton’s Alena Sharp carried her strong play into the final round, shooting a 67 to finish the event fourth at 16-under. Her best career finish to date earned her the Sandra Post Medal as the low Canadian professional at Canada’s National Women’s Open Golf Championship.

“I can’t really describe how great it feels to play this well in Canada, because I have not played well at the Canadian Open in recent years,” reflected Sharp, who missed the cut in 2009 – the last time the Canadian Women’s Open was in Calgary. “To be here in front of the hometown crowd – it’s amazing. There’s no better feeling to have.”

World No. 3 Brooke Henderson of Smiths Falls, Ont., and Maude-Aimée Leblanc of Sherbrooke, Que., matched 69s to finish with shares of 14th at 11-under. The finish marks the first time three Canadians have ever finished within the Top-15 in the championship’s history.

World No. 1 and three-time winner Lydia Ko also had a 69 in her final round to finish tied for seventh.

Buoyed by the unwavering support of her home province, Jaclyn Lee of Calgary finished at 2-under 286 to claim the Marlene Streit Medal as the championship’s low amateur. The Golf Canada National Amateur Team member gained a wealth of experience and memorable moments in her first LPGA Tour event.

“I think I’ll remember making my first LPGA cut – being the low amateur,” said the 19-year-old when asked what she will remember from the experience. “And honestly, I’ve said it so many times, but the fans are seriously amazing. Really, that’s something that I did’t think I expected – to have so much support.”

To coincide with the Canada 150 celebrations, next year’s CPKC Women’s Open will return to the nation’s capital and the Ottawa Hunt and Golf Club from August 21 to 27, 2017. CP will announce its charity partner at a later date.

ARIYA JUTANUGARN TAKES TWO-SHOT LEAD INTO FINAL ROUND OF CP WOMEN’S OPEN

Alena Sharp T5 heading into Sunday after 5-under 67

CALGARY – Ariya Jutanugarn shot a bogey-free, 8-under 64 to jump into the 36-hole lead at the CPKC Women’s Open.

CALGARY – Ariya Jutanugarn continues to cruise at the CPKC Women’s Open after shooting a third-round 5-under 67 to take a two-shot lead into Sunday’s final round at Priddis Greens Golf and Country Club.

Jutanugarn, who sits at 17-under, counted seven birdies through her first 15 holes then cooled with bogeys on 16 and 18 – only her second and third bogeys through 54 holes of dominant golf. The Thai golfer and World No. 2 has been the most dominant player on the LPGA Tour this season, having already collected her first four career victories in 2016 with a chance to capture a fifth on Sunday.

Despite bogeying two of her final three holes, Jutanugarn is confident heading into Sunday’s final round.

“Feeling good. I mean, I had two bogey the last three holes, but I still shot 5-under, so it’s still good,” said Jutanugarn.

Jutanugarn holds a two shot lead over In Gee Chun (-15) while Sei Young Kim and Stephanie Meadow are tied for third at 12-under. The big hitter from Bangkok is right where she wants to be heading into Sunday and is not concerned with the pack trying to chase her down.

“I keep the eye on me,” said Jutanugarn. “I’m not really care like who the leader is, like what I say yesterday. I really want to play my game and be happy on the course.”

Jutanugarn holds a special connection to Canada and especially the province of Alberta, having won the 2012 Canadian Women’s Amateur Championship held at the Lethbridge Country Club. If she can emerge victorious on Sunday, she would join Canadian golf legend Jocelyn Bourrassa as the only golfers to win both the Canadian Women’s Open and Canadian Women’s Amateur titles.

Hamilton native Alena Sharp carded a stellar third-round 5-under 67 to climb into contention with a share of fifth at 11-under alongside Anna Nordqvist, Ha Na Jang, Amy Yang and Chella Choi. Despite carding her best round of the week thus far, Sharp sees room for improvement in her play.

“I was not hitting it well the first nine holes, but I hung in there, and I think that’s something that’s gotten better with my game is when it’s not good, I realize, okay, just keep grinding away, it’s going to change, and the last six holes were great.”

Sharp also beamed at the support of the Canadians crowds. “I’m not from Alberta, but I feel like it. It’s nice to have the hometown crowd behind you. Even though it’s not my hometown, I love playing in Canada, obviously, and everybody is always cheering for me, so I really enjoyed it.”

The CPKC Women’s Open is the second leg of a very unique stretch for Sharp. After representing Canada at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro last week, she is now playing the first of two consecutive tournaments in her home country.

“It just keeps that Olympic pride going and I think if we were to come back from Rio and play in the U.S., it wouldn’t be feeling the same for me or for Brooke. Next week, I’m going to my own backyard, so I’m really going to enjoy that and get to see my parents and my family and friends.”

World No. 3 Brooke Henderson of Smiths Falls, Ont., matched her best round of the tournament on Saturday with a 4-under 68 to climb into a share of 21st at 8-under alongside fellow Canadian Maude-Aimée Leblanc of Sherbrooke, Que.

Calgary native Jaclyn Lee, a member of Canada’s National Amateur Team, continues to show well for the home crowd, carding a third-round 1-over 73 for a share of 47th position at 4-under, while Anne-Catherine Tanguay of Québec City rounds out the Canadian scoring with a share of 70th at 1-over.

Defending champion and three-time winner Lydia Ko fell back Saturday into a six-way tie for 10th at 10-under.

Final-round action at Priddis Greens gets underway with threesomes off split tees beginning at 8:33 a.m. MDT with the final pairing teeing-off at 10:45 a.m.

ARIYA JUTANUGARN SHOOTS 64 TO LEAD CP WOMEN’S OPEN

Canadians Alena Sharp, Maude-Aimée LeBlanc, Brooke Henderson and Anne-Catherine Tanguay along with Calgary amateur Jaclyn Lee advance to the weekend

News and notes from Priddis Greens Golf and Country Club for Friday, August 26

CALGARY – Ariya Jutanugarn shot a bogey-free, 8-under 64 to jump into the 36-hole lead at the CPKC Women’s Open.

Jutanugarn, who sits at 12-under heading into the weekend, showed little ill-effect from the knee injury that forced her to withdraw from the Olympic golf competition last week in Rio de Janeiro. One of the longest hitters on the LPGA Tour, she managed her way around Priddis Greens’ Raven course layout without a driver in her bag.

“Honestly, I don’t think it’s [the golf course] so good for my game. For me, it’s a little bit narrow and I can’t hit my driver,” said the world’s no. 2 ranked player who can hit two-iron more than 220 yards. “But right now I feel more confident because I can hit my iron on the fairway and my 3-wood on the fairway. Sometimes I feel more confident with my irons.”

Jutanugarn holds a special connection to Canada and particularly the province of Alberta having won the 2012 Canadian Women’s Amateur Championship at Lethbridge Country Club.

A four-time winner on the LPGA Tour—all of which have come in 2016—Jutanugarn holds a three-shot lead over Stephanie Meadow and In Gee Chun while defending champion Lydia Ko is tied with four others at 8-under, four shots back.

Seventy-four players made the cut at 1-under par 143 including five of the 16 Canadian competitors in the field.

Alena Sharp and Maude-Aimée LeBlanc head into weekend action as the low Canadians through 36 holes at 6-under par, good for a share of 14th position.

Sharp, who shot 2-under 70, came to Priddis Greens riding the Olympic momentum of representing Canada in Rio. The Hamilton native has been playing some of the best golf of her career over the past year and is brimming with confidence heading into the weekend.

“I’m driving it well; so my 3-wood, I hit a draw with it and I hit a cut with my driver so I have options off the tee,” said Sharp. “I missed a couple fairways today but got away with it because I had wedge in my hand. So I’m using my length to my advantage and I feel like the way I’m striking it and putts are going in, I have a good shot at it. Now I’ve got to play a couple more good rounds and see where it is on Sunday.”

LeBlanc’s 2016 performance at Priddis has been redemption of sorts, having narrowly missed the cut in 2009 as an amateur when a triple bogey on her 18th hole left her two shots out of weekend play when the club last hosted the stars of the LPGA Tour. The Sherbrooke, Que., native made eagle on her final hole and credited a hot putter for her impressive play through 36 holes.

“I played here in 2009, so I knew the course a little bit; I didn’t have a good experience back then so I got a little redemption this year,” said LeBlanc. “I think the longest putt I made before that [eagle putt on 18] was three, four feet all day. Yesterday the same thing, so it’s nice to finally see something going in.”

Calgary native Jaclyn Lee, a member of Canada’s national amateur team, will be a local crowd favourite as the 19-year old shot 2-under 70 to sit with a share of 20th at 5-under.

Brooke Henderson of Smiths Falls, Ont. shot a 4-under 68 Friday to hold a share of 29th at 4-under, while Anne-Catherine Tanguay will also play the weekend with a share of 62nd on the 1-under cut line.

Third-round action gets underway with threesomes off a split tee beginning Saturday at 8:38 am MDT with the final pairing teeing-off at 10:58 am.

STEPHANIE MEADOW SHOOTS 6-UNDER 66 TO TAKE CLUBHOUSE LEAD AT CP WOMEN’S OPEN

News and notes from Priddis Green Golf and Country Club for Thursday, August 25th

Weather delay forces suspension of Thursday’s opening-round with 54 golfers still to finish

Friday is Red & White Day at the CPKC Women’s Open

CALGARY – A two-hour and fifty-minute weather delay Thursday forced the suspension of opening-round play at the 2016 CPKC Women’s Open.

Thundershowers hit Priddis Greens Golf and Country Club late Thursday morning with 78 players in the afternoon wave yet to begin their opening round. Play would resume mid-afternoon with Ireland’s Stephanie Meadow firing a 6-under 66 to take the early clubhouse lead. Meadow, who finished T31 at last week’s Olympic golf competition, felt she carried over some momentum from her incredible experience at the Olympics.

“I think Rio was a huge adrenaline rush for everyone that was there,” said Meadow. “I know all of us had a fantastic experience. I played pretty good in the second round there, too. I think I definitely took some confidence and am rolling it into this week.”

Defending champion Lydia Ko continued her impressive play at the CPKC Women’s Open with an opening-round 5-under 67 to sit a shot off the lead. The 19-year old New Zealand native with 14 LPGA victory has won three of the past four iterations of the championship. The Olympic golf silver medalist has found a comfort zone competing for Canada’s National Women’s Open Championship.

“I’ve felt such a warm welcome whenever I come to Canada, and obviously because I think I’ve played well here, that I think that grows a little bit more,” said Ko, winner of the event in 2012, 2013 and 2015. “But the fans have been great. I said Canada reminds me a lot like home in New Zealand, and when you can relate back to places where you can relax and you love being there, I think that’s just another great part of that tournament.”

For Ko, even more impressive than her own quick start was the loyal support of the local gallery following a nearly three-hour delay.

“Even after the delays, the fans still come out to watch me play,” commented Ko. “I don’t know if I was in their shoes if I would be able to come out three hours later, but for them to be so interested and so excited to see us here, I think it’s really cool to see that.”

Alena Sharp of Hamilton finished her round of 4-under 68 just as play was called for the day to sit as the early round low Canadian. Maude-Aimee LeBlanc of Sherbrooke, Que. shot a 3-under 69, while Jessica Wallace of Langley, B.C., and Toronto’s Rebecca Lee-Bentham shot matching rounds of 2-under 70. Seven of the 16 Canadians competing at Priddis will complete their opening round on Friday morning.

The horn was blown at 8:23 pm MDT at Priddis Greens Golf and Country Club with 54 golfers yet to complete their opening-round. Play will resume at 7:15 am MDT with second-round action to follow.
